The Gibb River Road is definitely near the top of the list when it comes to one of the self drive adventures not to be missed across the whole of Australia, with its rugged terrain and landscape providing a challenging yet rewarding adventure for anyone.

The Gibb River Road stretches for 660km straight through the heart of the Kimberley taking you from the eastern point of Kununurra/Wyndham to the western point of Derby. Join us as we travel this harsh but stunning land, soaking up the gorges, ranges, and waterfalls that are the Kimberley region of Australia. Tick this one of the bucket list.

10 Day Adventure

Itineraries

Day 1

Explore Derby

“Ride Along” guests picked up from Broome at 8.30am and transported to Derby. We meet in Derby, here we visit the Boab Prison Tree, Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre, and some of the other attractions before heading to Birdwood Downs Station for our introduction dinner and first night of camping.

Day 2

Tunnel creek

Today we hit the Gibb as we head to tunnel creek. It’s now time to ready yourself with torches and reef shoes as we walk and swim through this amazing hidden cave. We then head to Windjana gorge campground for an amazing sundown inside the gorge as the wildlife come out to feed.

Day 3

Bell gorge

We leave Windjana and begin the dirt section of the Gibb as we head to Bell gorge, here you will get to experience some of the most amazing rock faces and waterfalls before taking a plunge at the massive lower pool, feeling refreshed we head to our overnight camp at Silent grove campground.

Day 4

Manning gorge

We start our day with a plunge at Adcock gorge, and then on to the little treasure that is Galvins gorge. Then we head to Barnett roadhouse, top up with fuel and supplies and then in to our overnight camp at Manning gorge campground. Here you can enjoy an end of day swim before the sun goes down.

Day 5

Gibb river

We make an early start as we hike in to Manning gorge and it’s beautiful waterholes. We then hit the road where we get to cross the Gibb river before pulling up at Drysdale to fuel up, enjoy happy hour, followed by a group feed at the restaurant before settling in for the evening.

Day 6

Munurru/King river

Today we start our journey towards Mitchell Falls, along the way we will get to explore some of the local aboriginal art sites where we will get to discover an array of aboriginal art before arriving at Munurru/King river campground. Grab your bathers or your fishing rod and head to the King River

Day 7

Mitchell Falls

An early start as we head to Mitchell falls, one of the greatest wonders of the Kimberleys. Here you have the option to hike or enjoy the amazing views that can only be experience by chopper. From here we head back to the Munurru/King river campground for the evening.

Day 8

World Famous Scones

Today we pull up at Gibb river with the option of a refreshing morning swim, then we make our way to Ellenbae to enjoy their world famous scones with fresh jam and cream. We then pull up at Home Valley station. Here we set up camp before enjoying a group dinner at Home Valley’s famous outback pub. Here we can enjoy quality Australian bush tucker, cold beer and live entertainment.

Day 9

Elquestro

Elquestro here we come. Today we cross the famous Pentacost river before arriving at the stunning Elquestro Gorge. From here we pull up at Elquestro station to set up camp, grab a table as we enjoy happy hour and the entertainment (fuel available)

Day 10

Kununurra

We start the morning with a relax in the warm springs of Zebedee, then on to Emma gorge, here we can enjoy the hike in before a refreshing plunge under a magnificent waterfall. From here we head to Kununurra pulling up at Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park. We will then enjoy a final dinner to reflect and say goodbye. Function venue will be confirmed closer to time

End of tour

Ride Along customers transported to airport on day 11.

  • Full trip planning and itinerary with a lead vehicle and guide for the full duration of the trip
  • Start of tour, 1 night camping at Birdwood station and meals for 2 included
  • End of tour, 1 night camping at Kimberley Waterfront Holiday Park
  • All booking pre arranged where possible
  • All required permits included, plus national park camping fees
  • Vehicle preparation guidance 
  • Ride along Guest – Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner with alcohol whilst on the Gibb 
  • Drop off and pick up for ride along customers from or to the airport as stated in the itinerary

  • Helicopter flight at Mitchell Falls as it is optional (cost for 2024 season was $189 one way)
  • Personal travel insurance (this is recommended due to the isolated emergency access of this tour)
  • Isolated vehicle recovery insurance (Club 4 x 4 are the only company we are aware of that offers this policy, please note that we do not have an affiliation with this company and would encourage you to do your own research)

SHORT ADVENTURES: (1-3 Day Trips)

  • A 4 wheel drive (not all wheel drive) with low and high range and good ground clearance
  • An all-terrain tyre minimum, or more aggressive
  • Rated recover points must be fitted (factory hooks are not acceptable)
  • UHF radio, minimum of 2w, hire unit can be supplied if required
  • Provisions to air down and air up your tires

OUTBACK ADVENTURES (Canning Stock Route & Gibb River Road)

  • A 4 wheel drive (not all wheel drive) with low and high range and good ground clearance
  • A LT rated all-terrain tyre minimum, or more aggressive tread. Preferably should include 2 spares
  • Reputable upgraded suspension due to the harsh corrugations encountered
  • Vehicle needs to be able to carry enough fuel to cover approximately 1050km offroad (Canning Stock Route)
  • Rated recover points must be fitted (factory hooks are not acceptable)
  • Snorkel Fitted.
  • UHF radio, minimum of 5watt, fitted to vehicle preferred. hand held hire unit can be supplied if required
  • Supplied vehicle inspection to be carried out 2 weeks prior to trip
  • Minimum spares to be carried, recommendation list will be supplied
  • Provisions to air down and air up your tires
  • Paint protection (Canning Stock Route). This is highly recommended as some sections can be very overgrown.
